As to MIDI files, it's important to remember that they reproduce sounds created with a computer program that tries to imitate musical instruments. On a first hearing you may be a bit disappointed because their quality is not the same of a musical instrument.
Of course, they can't replace a proper recording or live performance with a real instrument. However, MIDI files are a good way to get a first feeling of how a piece of music sounds like. It's a good start.
